The finished coat carries the evidence quietly. Its ease is there when you reach. Its weight settles when you stop. Good pattern work is not invisible; it is simply experienced before it is noticed.
The Coat Begins on Paper
Before the Orbit Coat has weight, colour, or a pocket, it is a line drawn at full scale. The shoulder begins slightly behind the body. The front closes off-centre. The hem turns forward by less than a centimetre.
None of those decisions look dramatic on paper. Together, they determine whether the coat holds its shape while the person inside it keeps moving.
Draw the balance first
A coat pattern is a set of negotiations. Space across the back must not become bulk at the waist. A strong shoulder must still let the arm reach a bicycle handlebar. A deep pocket must not pull the front out of line.
We test those relationships in calico before cutting wool. The toile looks plain because it has nowhere to hide. That is its value.
